Whilst one would architect this using multiple microcontrollers, such an approach seems silly when a single Arduino Mega has far more computing power that you need. This does not leave a lot of time in the Arduino for performing other tasks. Steppers require constant attention from the Arduino to keep going around. Microcontrollers like Arduino have a fundamental problem with stepper motors.

This project needed a wide range of inputs and outputs, so has been done using an Arduino Mega 1280 board, although a Mega 2560 would do just as well. I decided to make my own telescope control system from the ground up and the Arduino platform seemed the obvious choice. It was also impossible for me to change the programming or maintain the system. This system was extremely slow, underpowered and unreliable. The MPC and orbital features are designed for visualization and not accurate simulation, that is why we don’t show any derived calculations from MPC orbits. The MPC creates updates to get estimated paths, but they are not close enough for detailed study. Those are simple orbital elements and we don’t do the multi-body simulation required to get really accurate tracks for things that come really close to planetary bodies.

When you create a new reference frame from an MPC objects it captures those orbital elements at the creation time.

WWT should not be used to see if a MPC object might collide with Earth or to specifically spot a RA/DEC of a nearby object. This fundementally limits us to much less precision than the planetary and moon computation.

To calculate almost 700,000 objects 60 times a second we need to use Floats in the GPU, doubles are not an option.

The MPC data needs a fresh download to get the best accuracy.
